SpaceX, OpenAI IPOs: Valued at $1 Trillion, Set to Leapfrog Berkshire Hathaway (2026)

The upcoming IPOs of SpaceX and OpenAI have the potential to disrupt the tech landscape and challenge the dominance of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. With valuations north of $1 trillion, these companies are set to leapfrog the investment giant on their first day of trading, according to traders on prediction market platform Kalshi. This development raises intriguing questions about the future of the tech industry and the role of traditional investment firms.

One thing that immediately stands out is the sheer magnitude of these valuations. SpaceX, valued at $1.25 trillion in February, could close its first trading day above $2.2 trillion, while OpenAI, last valued at $852 billion, is expected to end its debut above $1.4 trillion. These numbers are mind-boggling, especially considering that Berkshire Hathaway's market cap is currently at $1.03 trillion. What makes this particularly fascinating is the fact that these companies are unprofitable, at least for now. SpaceX generated $18.67 billion in revenues during 2025, while OpenAI reportedly made $13.1 billion in revenue last year. In contrast, Berkshire Hathaway had over $350 billion in revenue last year.

From my perspective, the rush of these IPOs in a row has created concerns about the capacity of the market to absorb such high valuations. However, as Deutsche Bank analyst Adrian Cox pointed out, the US stock market is worth about $70 trillion overall, which is five times larger in nominal terms than it was at the peak of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s. At that time, there was an average of almost 500 IPOs a year, compared with about 120 this decade. This suggests that the market has the capacity to handle these high valuations, and that the concerns may be overblown.

What many people don't realize is that the growing number of ways to raise capital outside of public markets has allowed companies to stay private for longer. This has contributed to the surge in valuations, as companies have been able to raise capital through alternative means, such as private investments and venture capital funding. However, the question remains: what does this mean for the future of the tech industry and the role of traditional investment firms?

In my opinion, the upcoming IPOs of SpaceX and OpenAI are a testament to the power of innovation and disruption. These companies have the potential to challenge the status quo and create new opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs alike. However, it remains to be seen whether they can sustain their high valuations and deliver on their promises. One thing is certain: the tech landscape is about to change dramatically, and the impact of these IPOs will be felt for years to come.
